Specialized Data Structures
Python’s built-in lists, dictionaries, sets, and tuples handle most everyday tasks. But some patterns appear so often—counting items, grouping data, modeling lightweight records, or managing efficient queues—that dedicated structures make the work faster, clearer, and easier to maintain.
To support these recurring needs, Python’s standard library includes a set of optimized, expressive data structures. They act as focused tools: small, powerful, and designed to solve common data-processing challenges without extra boilerplate.
In this chapter, we explore a set of specialized data-structure classes and utilities provided by Python’s standard library, including: - Counter, defaultdict, namedtuple, and deque — high-level data-structure classes and factory functions from the collections module - Combinatorial and functional iterators such as combinations, permutations, product, and chain from the itertools module - Heap-based priority queue functions like heappush, heappop, and nsmallest from the heapq module - Categorical enumeration types using the Enum class from the enum module
Each of these structures addresses a specific real-world problem and helps you write code that is both efficient and elegant.
